Tips For Winter Camping Gear

Camping is a favorite pastime for many Americans. Most of the time, this is done during the spring and summer months when families can go out and enjoy the warm weather together. However, for many people, it's more than just casual family activity, it's a passion. These people head out into the wilderness any chance they get, regardless of the weather. If you are thinking about venturing out during the colder months, this article will give you some helpful tips for assembling your winter camping gear.

Things to Consider

Obviously, there are some special considerations to make when gathering your winter camping gear. The first and most important thing to consider is how to make sure you can withstand the lower, sometimes subzero temperatures. Also, there are additional hazards that are not present during the summer months. Your chances of sustaining an injury from slipping and falling are increased during this time of year. Another thing people sometimes overlook is the fact that the days are much shorter during the winter, so more of your camping time will be spent in the dark. Obviously, frostbite and hypothermia are also major concerns this time of year.

Planning Your Gear

When planning your winter camping gear, the key is to provide enough warmth no matter how bad the weather gets. You don't want to get out there and be surprised by subzero temperatures. Basically, don't trust the weather reports. Plan as if you are going to encounter the worst conditions possible. You don't want to make the mistake of wishing you would have. It's not just dangerous, it's possibly life threatening.

The first piece of winter we'll look at is clothing. Obviously, your camping trip will be safer and more enjoyable if you keep your body warm. Wool clothing is some of the best for winter camping. It can however, become extremely heavy when it gets wet from perspiration. The most important thing is to dress in layers. This way you will be warm enough at night and still have the freedom to remove some clothing if you're working during the day.

Proper head and face protection is equally important since most of the heat your body loses is through the head. A face mask is also recommended for when the winter wind kicks up. Also, remember to pack plenty of extra, dry clothing so you don't have to find yourself spending the night in wet, cold conditions.

Assuming that you won't be staying in a camper, a good sized dome tent is the best option. Unlike some other tents, a dome tent will not allow snow to build up on the roof. There are many tents available that are designed for winter camping.

One of the most important pieces of winter is a good sleeping bag. When selecting a sleeping bag, choose one that has a temperature rating that is well below what you think you will encounter. A mummy style bag with a hood is probably your best bet. Also, make sure it fits you well so cold air cannot get inside.

Your food choices will also be an important part of your winter camping gear. You'll need to eat more to provide your body with the fuel it needs to stay warm. Plenty of carbohydrates and proteins should provide you with the energy you need. Also, no matter what kind of camping you are doing, take plenty of first aid supplies.
