When buying camping equipment for the first time, the desire to save money may be strong, but if you are going to use the equipment for a long time, buying discount may not be in your best interest. If you are not sure if you are going to like sleeping out in the woods, paying top dollar for the best equipment on the market may also end up being a waste of money, so buying discount just until you find out if your interest is real or just a fancy might be financially prudent.
One thing about buying discount at a discount retailer is that some of the manufacturers offer various qualities in their products. Some of the lower-end merchandise is sold in discount stores while their better quality merchandise is made available at sport specialty stores. Remember that just because the discount may have the name of a reputable manufacturer does not mean it will work the same as the higher priced merchandise available in other outlets.
There are some pieces of equipment that probably should not be chosen based solely on price. If you are buying a stove for cooking for example, the quality should be important to insure it will work when you need it to work. Often times stoves included in displays of discount may not be able to survive more than one or two uses and ends up in the junk pile before realizing a return on your investment.
Make Sure You Get What You Pay For
With nearly everything bought in stores, there is a relationship between quality and price and with discount you usually get what you pay for. Durability becomes an important part of the equation if you plan to use it frequently, but if you are looking for a small tent and a couple pf sleeping bags for the kids to camp out in the backyard, then the discount will probably serve the purpose.
However, if you are planning to take the family into the wilderness for a week or so and want to make sure they are safe and secure the choice of discount may not be a prudent financial decision. You will want to know the tent is not going to leak and that the sleeping bags will keep them warm while huddled in the tent through potentially cold evenings.
