Portable gas lights were not necessarily invented by W.C. Coleman, but spreading their use beyond a couple of shop displays in Kingfisher, Oklahoma was and it did not take long for Coleman to rise to the top of the market. His discovery of a lamp that used compressed gas and mantles to provide bright, white light, as opposed to oil and wicks, led to the development of the Coleman known as the tabletop lamp that became a staple on farms and for use by the military in 1909.
He introduced the 300 candlepower lamp in 1909 that sent a light 100-yards in all directions, putting him in the right position as a leading maker of Coleman when, after the first world war and the invention of the automobile the country went on a travel binge. From his factory in Wichita, Kansas where he moved in 1902, he developed the fold up camp stove in 1923, meeting the needs for those hitting the road in their new automobiles.
As the saying goes, the rest is history, and with over 100 years experience in providing products people can use for camping or in their own homes during emergencies, Coleman has grown into one of the largest manufacturers of camping equipment in the world.
